Nordtoppen became Sweden's highest peak for the first time in 2018 after a hot summer with high melting of Sydtoppen.

As the Nordtoppen will often be higher, Stefan Nilsson, operations leader at the alpine mountain rescue, fears that more people will want to climb that peak as well.

Mountain rescue practices more

The only way there is to walk on the narrow ridge between Sydtoppen and Nordtoppen.

The soldier who was killed last week was, according to the Swedish Defense Forces, used to the mountains and well trained for difficult mountain conditions.

But the risk is that even people who lack that knowledge will attempt too difficult challenges at Kebnekaise.

More exercises in the area

For some time, the mountain rescue has also been preparing for more rescue efforts in the area based on such a scenario.

- We have chosen to place more exercises in that area, says Stefan Nilsson.

In the clip, he tells more about how mountain rescue sees the life-threatening ridge.
