The 54th edition of the NAACP Image Awards took place on Saturday in Pasadena, California, the awards given by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for black personalities in the art world who have done a job worthy of attention in the past season.

Will Smith was not there but he won for the film about the drama about slavery, of which he is also one of the producers, Emancipation. His first accolade since last year's Academy Awards, where he slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage before winning his first Best Actor trophy.

During the NAACP Image Awards ceremony, hosted by singer Queen Latifah, the "special prizes" went to former basketball player Dwyane Wade, actress Gabrielle Union and civil rights lawyer Ben Crump.

Serena Williams received the Jackie Robinson Sports Award, which recognizes people in sport for outstanding achievements in athletics, along with their pursuit of social justice, civil rights and community involvement.

Angela Bassett won Entertainer Of The Year, the first prize of the evening, but also the award for best supporting actress in the film for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – winner of the award for best picture – and best actress in a drama series.

Two other acting awards went toViola Davis who won Best Actress in The Woman King, and Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta who won as a supporting actor in the film Black Panther: WakandaForever.
