G20 meeting in India ends without consensus on Ukraine war

A meeting of G20 finance ministers ended Saturday without consensus, with Russia and China objecting to the description of Ukraine's war in the final document.

The meeting, hosted by India, issued a final document stating that there was no agreement on wording on the war in Ukraine. The first day of the meeting was held on the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The Group of Seven major industrialists announced new sanctions against Russia on Friday, and talks in Bengaluru, India, were marked by confusion over the issue.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen condemned the "illegal and unjustified war against Ukraine" at a session attended by Russian officials, and repeated calls for G20 countries to do more to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

At the last major G20 meeting in Indonesia's Bali in November, leaders strongly condemned the war and warned that the conflict was increasing the fragility of the global economy.

The group includes Russia and also countries such as China and India that have significant trade with Moscow.
