Swimming in the Marne and Seine: this is the stated objective for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The rainwater depollution station (Sdep) of Champigny-sur-Marne (Val-de-Marne) is part of the arsenal set up to achieve this, reports Le Parisien.

This plant has several devices to retain and evacuate the largest waste and eliminate suspended solids. Ultraviolet lamps will be installed to kill bacteria before the water is discharged into the Marne.

Beaches and bathing sites for 2025

The structure is in its final year of construction and will be delivered in April 2024 – a few months before the opening of the Olympic Games. It will not yet be possible to swim in the Marne. But the goal is set "by the end of 2024," promised Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, the Minister of Sports.

Regardless, the Olympic events will take place on the Seine and the region's ambition is longer-term. In 2025, six or seven bathing sites and beaches could see the light of day on the banks of the Marne.
