Two firefighters were sentenced Tuesday by the court of Bergerac (Dordogne) for manslaughter. They were on trial for the road accident that occurred on April 2, 2021 in Saint-Vincent-de-Cosse, reports France Bleu Périgord.

On the day of the incident, one of the defendants was carrying a boat on a trailer, pulled by a fire truck. The trailer detached, veered into the other lane and collided head-on with an oncoming car. The 59-year-old driver died instantly.

65,000 euros in damages

The investigation showed that a damaged bolt allowed the trailer to detach. The emergency brake cable, which was too short for the trailer, also failed. The two firefighters on trial, aged 42 and 56, were therefore a mechanic and the driver of the truck.

They were fined 2,000 and 2,500 euros respectively. The SDIS 24, also in the dock, was acquitted in criminal proceedings, saysSud Ouest. In civil proceedings, the three parties were sentenced together to 65,000 euros in damages.
