Former US President Jimmy Carter, the oldest living former US president, is receiving a nursing home service after deciding to avoid additional "medical intervention", the Carter Center announced yesterday.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the 98-year-old former president made his decision after a series of brief visits to the hospital, according to the Carter Center, a nonprofit group created to do philanthropic activities with the support of former president and former first lady Rosalynn Carter.

"Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter decided to spend the rest of his life at home with his family, receiving hospice care at home instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and medical team."

"The Carter family is demanding privacy at this time and is grateful for the concern expressed by many of his fans," the nonprofit said. The statement did not say why Carter was admitted and discharged from the hospital. In August 2015, Carter developed skin cancer but underwent successful immunotherapy treatment and became tumor-free about four months later.

After a pelvic fracture in October, Carter is now back at Sunday School in Georgia and revealed that he is now "completely relieved to die," as in August 2015, Carter was diagnosed with skin cancer and was told it had spread to the liver and brain.

Carter was elected president of the United States in 1976 and served a single four-year term. After losing the chance of re-election, he indulged in charity activities. In 1982, he and his wife founded the Carter Center, which lobbied for peaceful solutions to global conflicts, promoted human rights, and worked to eradicate disease in poor countries.
