Oldest Living Former U.S. President

Jimmy Carter Receives Home Aged Care Service

Former US President Jimmy Carter, the oldest living former US president, is receiving a nursing service at home, after deciding to avoid additional "medical intervention", the Carter Center announced Saturday.

The 98-year-old former president made his decision after a series of brief visits to the hospital, according to the Carter Center, a nonprofit group created to carry out philanthropic activities with the support of former president and former first lady Rosalynn Carter.

"After a series of short hospital stays, Jimmy Carter today decided to spend the rest of his life at home with his family and receive hospice care at home instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and medical team."

The nonprofit said: "The Carter family is demanding privacy at this time and is grateful for the concern expressed by many of his fans."

The statement did not say why Carter was admitted and discharged from the hospital.

Carter was elected President of the United States in 1976 and served for one four-year term.

After losing the chance of re-election, he indulged in charity activities. In 1982, he and his wife founded the Carter Center, which lobbied for peaceful solutions to global conflicts, promoted human rights, and worked to eradicate disease in poor countries.
