Smoke from hundreds of wildfires is enveloping parts of eastern Canada and the northeastern United States in a reddish fog that makes the air acrid and causes breathing problems.
The effects have reached as far as New York and threaten to spread to New England.

On Tuesday night, the Manhattan skyline looked spooky, shrouded in dense reddish haze.
The city issued a warning about poor air quality that caused schools in many districts to cancel outdoor activities.
The IQAir website, which globally monitors air quality in real time, defines the current situation in the Big Apple as "unhealthy" due to the massive presence of PM2.5, the very small particulate matter contained in the smoke of fires.
