A team of psychiatric experts in the United States has found a link between sleep disorders and social media use in the evening, through a study of 44,<> Reddit users.

Previous studies have found that exposure to blue light, which is emitted from the screens of mobile phones and tablets, affects the natural sleep patterns of humans, because it affects the production of melatonin in the body, but the research team from Yale and Duke University found that posting posts on social media before bed, can delay sleep.

As part of the study, published in the scientific journal Sleep Medicine, the research team analyzed 120 million posts made by 44,15 people on the social networking site Reddit over <> years, and through continuous analysis, they were able to determine the normal sleep hours of those who use this site frequently, allowing them to study the impact of blogging on social networking sites on normal sleep hours.

The researchers found that posting a post on the site an hour before normal bedtime would likely result in the user staying awake beyond their normal bedtime, for an average of one to three hours. The research team added in statements to the website «Medical Express», which specializes in medical research, that «publishing more than one post before bedtime, may lead to the user staying alert for a longer period».

The researchers attributed the causes of this phenomenon to the high levels of dopamine in the brain due to the user's anticipation of the response from the rest of the users of the site to his post, which leads to disruption of the possibility of relaxation before sleep.

Previous studies have revealed that high levels of dopamine contribute to increased mental activity and alertness, all symptoms that interfere with normal sleep.
