The city of Halifax in Nova Scotia has declared a state of emergency due to a fire that is raging in the area.

The fire caused a huge column of smoke over the port city along Canada's east coast.

Video recorded by the dashboard camera shows a car venturing into the middle of the fire in Hammonds Plains with smoke completely obscuring the sky and flames lapping the road on both sides.

The smoke is so thick that it eliminates visibility so that another vehicle suddenly appears in front of the car that is forced to brake sharply.

The fire caused interruptions in the electricity supply and forced some communities to evacuate.

The state of emergency will remain in place for seven days, unless it is lifted or extended, city authorities said.
