A young homeless man was indicted on Monday in Montpellier for the murder of a septuagenarian found dead on Saturday in the parking lot of his residence. The victim, aged 72 and living in the district of Aiguelongue, presented at the time of the discovery of his body "several wounds at the throat, probably made by a knife," recalls Monday Fabrice Bélargent, the prosecutor of the Republic of Montpellier, in a statement. She lived alone, was placed under curatorship, suffered from "psychological fragilities" and "was known to wander around the residence at any time of the day or night," says the magistrate.
At the same time, the police officers of the police station of Montpellier arrested in the night from Saturday to Sunday a man in his twenties "who was walking on the public road and was carrying a knife".
A testimony, images but no confession
Several elements allowed investigators to make the link with the homicide perpetrated probably a few hours earlier. First, the "testimony of a person who recognized the individual arrested (...) for having met him in the parking lot of the residence where the body was discovered, on May 27 at 1:30 am, "according to the prosecutor. Then, the exploitation of CCTV images that confirmed the presence of the suspect in the Aiguelongue district on the night of May 26 to 27.
Finally, Fabrice Bélargent stresses that traces of blood, still being analyzed, were "discovered on the clothing worn by the person concerned". The latter, unknown to the police, has "obvious behavioral disorders" but "disputed any involvement in the facts".
The identity of the suspect remains to be determined
"At this stage of the investigation, the identity of the person concerned is not established. He provided an incorrect marital status and refused to comment on his past. He said he was born and has always lived in Montpellier, specifying that he was homeless for a few days, "adds the prosecutor.
Indicted for intentional homicide, the young suspect was placed in pre-trial detention.
