• Ruben Östlund and his jury obviously agreed to give the Palme d'Or to Justine Triet's excellent "Anatomy of a Fall".
  • They commented little on their decision and seemed eager to keep their conversations a secret.
  • Justine Triet's film will be in theaters on August 23.

It was brief. The jury of the Cannes Film Festival, chaired by Swedish director Ruben Östlund, was united in defending the colours of the Palme d'Or awarded to Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall, a fascinating trial film that will be released in cinemas on 23 August.

"It was exhausting to watch these 21 films together," says the president of the jury. "I didn't make the decision alone, our conversations were very lively." Actor Denis Ménochet also enjoyed the experience. "It was exciting to see films with such different people," he said.

A difficult but assumed choice

"It was not easy this year as the competition was rich, admits the president. But maybe that's the case every year. The international press gave Jonathan Glazer's The Zone Of Interest, the big favorite. Asked about this, Ruben Östlund was rather dry. "We didn't read the reviews. We locked ourselves in and stayed focused on our own discussions. Okay.

The president of the Jury was hardly more verbose in defending Justine Triet's film. "It was a very intense collective experience, everything I expect from cinema."

That's all, the jury will say no more. From their discussions, we will just know that they were also very intense, according to actress Brie Larson. We would have liked them to tell us a little more but Ruben Östlund had warned and he kept his word: nothing filtered from the exchanges between the jurors.
