Cannes is always everything at the same time: over-glamorous and highly political, escapism and a keen eye on the present, sun-kissed beach drinks and rain-soaked queuing. The contrasts are already evident when you walk to the Festival Palace: the restaurant that used to serve the good Roquefort steaks did not survive the pandemic (a sign on the window thanks you for years of loyal customers); Meanwhile, in front of the Palais des Festivals, people in black suits with bow ties or floor-length, tight evening dresses are already walking up and down in front of the Palais des Festivals at eight o'clock in the morning, because they won't have time to hop back into the hotel in the afternoon before the cinema premieres.

Cannes is uber-glamorous; Let's start there to work our way to the dark side as slowly as the stars take off their Gucci sunglasses when they enter a hotel lobby. This small town on the Côte d'Azur still has the power to produce new stars or make a comeback for old ones during the almost two-week film festival – both of which the Depp family showed this year.

Lily-Rose Depp came to the premiere of the series "The Idol" in a tight black dress with long gloves and waved to the photographers smoking, as if she had learned such casual appearances in front of cameras from her parents, actors Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis.

Naked skin and self-confidence as well as a role in a series in which she plays an up-and-coming music star with a lot of naked skin and explicit sex scenes – what she makes of it remains to be seen. Father Depp, on the other hand, celebrated by the French audience at the beginning of the festival, did not want to know anything about a "comeback" at the press conference for the opening film "Jeanne du Barry": "I live around the corner here, there can be no question of returning."

Meanwhile, Scarlett Johansson, who traveled for the Wes Anderson film "Asteroid City", took the opportunity to polish up not only her own name, but also that of her care brand. On her Instagram channel, she presented her beauty routine in a fluffy hotel bathrobe before the big premiere evening. In addition to the Oscars, the festival has long since become the largest showcase for brand appearances.

Fashion and jewelry designers not only outfit the directors and actresses for the gala receptions, they also invite celebrities from outside the industry. For example, the quartet of the South Korean pop group Aespa could be seen posing in front of the photographers. All four are dressed in large robes (white lace, black tulle) and the blue and red glittering necklaces, bracelets and earrings of the Swiss luxury jeweler Chopard.

The jewellery manufacturer is an official partner of the festival, designed the Palme d'Or and organises the Chopard Trophy Party during the festival, for which models and actresses in high heels clacked in the beach bar of the venerable Carlton Hotel. "Beach bar" in Cannes means: a huge hall with a view of the sea, through the transparent walls you can see the sun sinking into the floods, all around long tables with heavy white blankets. Dress code: Black Tie.

For exceptions, you have to be called Leonardo DiCaprio, who was even allowed to enter the charity gala of the international foundation for AIDS research AmfAR on Thursday evening at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes with a black baseball cap. For everyone else, stricter rules apply. Even though flat shoes are now allowed on the steep stairs up to the Festival Palace, an extra section on the website when booking tickets points out: no sneakers!
