• Messy, the boarder collie who plays Snoop, the guide dog of a visually impaired child in the film Anatomy of a fall, signed Justine Triet, won this Friday the Palm Dog 2023, which rewards the best "canine actor".
  • This year, in front of the "range of performances", this parallel award has even made children: the dog seen in Les Feuilles mortes received the Grand Jury Prize and that of Vincent must die the "prize for incredible performance"
  • The Palm Dog jury also awarded a Grand Prix d'honneur to British director Ken Loach, "for his entire career with a special mention" for his film The Old Oak, in competition.

By choosing the winner of the Palm Dog 2023, best four-legged actor of the various competitions of the Croisette, the jury was "captivated" by a real "canine cinematographic performance". And it must be admitted, in Anatomy of a Fall, the film by Justine Triet in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Messy has everything of a great actor. The boarder collie who plays Snoop, the guide dog of a visually impaired child, impresses in particular in a moving scene. He simulates, with strength and conviction, the disease.

Absent at this ceremony organized this Friday, the winner was represented by a close cousin, of the same race. Laura Martin, animal trainer, his partner during the filming had left a message on video. This award "is the fruit of a lot of work," she explained, leaving Messy also thanking the public in his own way.

From dogs stealing the show to (real) actors

This year, in front of the "range of performances", this parallel award has even made small. Two other four-legged stars were crowned. Chaplin, seen in Aki Kaurismäki's Dead Leaves, the director's own dog will be able to decorate his basket with a Grand Jury Prize. The two main actors of the film, Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen, came in person to pick up the necklace on Friday.

The amazing Susie, who plays the role of Sultan in Vincent Must Die (Critics' Week), won the "Incredible Performance Award". A minimum for our journalist Caroline Vié and the actors of the film themselves who campaigned for the Staffordshire Bull-Terrier to win the palm... Dog. "We must not believe that all animals are good actors. Suzie is exceptional," explained Karim Leklou, who was literally stolen from the show.

The jury of the Palm Dog preferred Messy. And also awarded a last award, the Grand Prix d'honneur, not to a dog but to a filmmaker: the British Ken Loach, "for his entire career with a special mention" for his film The Old Oak, in competition. A ball of hair named Marra trusts, there too, the very first roles. The collar was given to the director by Yoann Latouche, the organizer of this ceremony who really has dog.
