Public information shows that Zheng Zhenyao was born in 1936 and is originally from Anhui. Her family is poor, and her personality is soft on the outside and rigid on the inside. Zheng Zhenyao was admitted to the Children's Theater Troupe of the China Welfare Association when she was just 12 years old, and participated in many dramas to become a "little star".

In 1954, the Central Academy of Drama opened an acting training class, and most of the students were transfer students. Zheng Zhenyao, who was only 17 years old at the time, was unexpectedly admitted as a transfer student by the examiner because of her outstanding talent skills such as recitation, sketches, and singing.

After four years of further study, Zheng Zhenyao's lines and performance subjects have excellent results. However, because she has not gone to middle school and her cultural foundation is slightly thin, she has some difficulty in taking the "script analysis" class, and even failed her grades once. Zheng Zhenyao was so shocked that she even ran to a secluded place in Beihai Park to cry. But she quickly picked herself up and often read at night. By the time she graduated, Zheng Zhenyao had straight A.

In 1958, after graduation, Zheng Zhenyao was assigned to the Central Experimental Theater, and since then has starred in many classic dramas, including Katerina in the drama "Great Thunderstorm", Princess Wencheng in "Princess Wencheng", Li Xiangjun in "Peach Blossom Fan", Bai Ling in "The Last Scene", Jinberry Ying in "Dawn", Mrs. Qi in "Gale Song", Xia Zhixian in "Wind and Rain" and so on.

These classic stage images were brought to life by Zheng Zhenyao, who gained popularity and attracted the attention of many film directors. In Zheng Zhenyao's view, drama and film are sister arts, and they should learn from each other and broaden their paths, which is what any actor dreams of.

In 1983, Zheng Zhenyao won the Best Supporting Actress Award at the <>rd Chinese Film Golden Rooster Awards for her role as Song Ma in "Old Things in the South of the City". After accepting this role, Zheng Zhenyao, who was good at playing ladies, princesses, and ladies at that time, once admitted that this role was difficult to perform, and she had not tried this kind of role in the past, and she was a little trembling.

In order to play "Mother Song" well, Zheng Zhenyao asked friends who live in rural areas on the outskirts of Beijing to help check the lines and study how to show more local colors. She also specially took Shen Jie, a young actor who played Yingzi, to live with her at home, and the mode of getting along was set according to the plot, and Shen Jie called her "Mother Song".

In the end, Zheng Zhenyao successfully created the image of a "native mother" who was called by a big family in the capital in the twenties and thirties of the last century, adding color to the film.
