• The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival began on May 16. A total of 21 filmmakers are in the running for the Palme d'Or, including seven women, a record level for the world's largest film festival.
  • They will be decided this Saturday by a nine-member jury chaired by Ruben Östlund, winner of his second Palme d'Or in 2022 for Sans filtre.
  • Shock phrase, essential photos, indiscretions, glitter ... Every evening, around 18:30 pm, 20 Minutes gives you its recap of the Cannes day, from the red carpet to the backstage of the Croisette.

Only two days left and it's the end of the Cannes Film Festival. La Semaine de la critique delivered its first awards yesterday and, on the competition side, there is already talk of favorites for the Palme d'Or. Among them, the Chinese Wang Bing, the French Justine Triet, the Finnish Aki Kaurismaki and above all...

Today's event: Nanni Moretti at the top

Has Nanni Moretti climbed the steps towards a bright future? At 69, the Italian director has in any case enchanted the Croisette by offering himself a new role as a filmmaker at work, rather dashing even if somewhat overwhelmed by the working methods of his contemporaries, and whose illusions, sentimental and political, ended up falling one after the other. Here is a filmmaker's film, about cinema, without meandering or nostalgia, simply touching and successful.

Today's quote: "I accept to be an appetizing dish" (Juliette Binoche)

"I agree to share the spotlight with the food and to be considered an appetizing delicacy," Juliette Binoche told 20 Minutes. Yesterday, she climbed the steps for The Passion of Dodin Bouffant by Tran Anh Hung, a love story (with Benoît Magimel, her ex, and food, therefore) screened in competition.

Picture of the day: Winnie Harlow shows her marks

Suffering from vitiligo, Canadian supermodel Winnie Harlow caused a sensation on Wednesday, May 24, during the climb of the steps of the French film The Passion of Dodin Bouffant.

Born in Toronto to parents of Jamaican origin, Winnie Harlow, whose real name is Chantelle Brown Young, has suffered from vitiligo, a skin depigmentation, since the age of 4. Revealed in 2014, during the telecrochet America's Next Top Model, she appears in the video of Guts Over Fear by Eminem, in duet with the singer Sia. In recent years, she has become accustomed to walking the red carpet, in Cannes or elsewhere, as an ambassador of this still little-known disease.

Today's award: "Tiger stripes", a gore Grand Prix of Malaysia

The jury of the Critics' Week, chaired by Audrey Diwan (The Event), awarded Wednesday evening its Grand Prize to Malaysian Amanda Nell Eu for Tiger stripes, a fantastic film about puberty mixing humor and horror. A tale of emancipation, the film follows 12-year-old Zaffan, who lives in a small rural community in Malaysia and sees his body transform at an alarming rate. Sometimes gory, this film is in some ways compared to Julia Ducournau's Grave, herself discovered at Critics' Week in 2016 before being awarded the Palme d'Or in 2021 for Titanium.

Today's figure: more than 14,000 accredited

"The Marché du Film broke this year an attendance record with more than 14,000 accredited professionals from more than 120 countries, more than the previous record of 12,500 accredited which dates back to 2019," Guillaume Esmiol told AFP. "We are exceeding the figures before the Covid crisis, which is an excellent indicator," commented the deputy director of this meeting of producers, distributors, exporters and importers, created in 1959.

To be continued tomorrow: the last of Ken Loach

The latest film in competition will be screened tomorrow evening at 18:30 pm. This is The Old Oak by veteran Ken Loach, 86, already twice awarded the Palme d'Or for The Wind Rises in 2006 and for Me, Daniel Blake in 2016. The pass of three for what is likely to be his latest film and his twentieth participation in Cannes? Why not.
