A Mexican woman who was sentenced last week to six years in prison for killing her rapist during the crime remains free. After protests from women's associations and lawyers, the public prosecutor's office unexpectedly dropped the charges against 23-year-old Roxana Ruiz. According to the prosecutors of the state of Mexico, Ruiz killed her rapist in self-defense.

Last week, the conviction of the saleswoman was justified with "excessive violence" against the man. Ruiz, who is raising a four-year-old daughter and is single, had met him in 2021 in Nezahualcóyotl, about 20 kilometers east of Mexico City.

After an evening together, he accompanied her home and asked to be allowed to spend the night with her because of the long way back. While Ruiz was sleeping, he attacked her and raped her. The police had later picked up the saleswoman when she dragged the body across the street in a plastic bag. Ruiz had failed to examine for vaginal injuries at the time.
