A false alarm but a real intervention. A crocodile hunt was improvised Monday at the foot of the old bridge of Bergerac, in the waters of the Dordogne, to try to catch the fearsome animal that turned out to be a fake.

At the end of the afternoon, the town posted a very serious message on its Facebook page, inviting its inhabitants "to avoid the sector" of the Garrigat quay, in the city center, "closed to traffic following the discovery of an alleged "crocodile"". "A passerby called us because he had seen something resembling this animal in the river," rescuers said.

Two hours of intervention

A dozen firefighters, including divers, went to the scene shortly after 16 p.m., joined by the gendarmerie and the French Office for Biodiversity. Using poles and nets to approach the beast cautiously, the specialists of the nautical brigade finally emerged from the water, two hours later, a specimen perfectly imitating the morphology of the crocodilid.

[unusual] the @pompiers24 intervened for 1 crocodile in the river in Bergerac. The animal was fake. Animal rescue is one of the missions of the SP and are always ready to intervene, but our resources are precious and should not be misused! pic.twitter.com/IHeEXtSkct

"Unfortunately, the animal did die. Congratulations to SDIS 24," the municipality wrote once the alert was lifted. Before quickly specifying, photos in support, that the animal was indeed a "fake".
