• Emilio de Justo, the miracle of bullfighting again: "I have never wanted to see the bulls that I left to kill in Madrid"

The Corrida de la Prensa that will close the San Isidro fair on June 4 is on the border of hanging the long-awaited "no tickets" sign. Suddenly, suddenly, in this year 2023, in this edition of the centennial bullfight, the traditional celebration has recovered its shine. the pull of his best times. To the claim of the names of Paco Ureña, Emilio de Justo and Victorino, interest has risen like foam. There are barely 700 tickets left. The Press Association of Madrid (APM) also commemorates the 100 years of the Golden Ear and, as icing, will have the master Paco Ojeda as bullfighting advisor of the highest category for royalty.

For all these reasons, the president of the APM, Juan Caño, is happy.

Q.- It's all going smoothly.

A.-This year's edition is a very special edition of the Corrida de la Prensa. And it is because once again it has been possible to maintain a deep-rooted tradition, after the COVID crisis and see how the celebration was suspended just when its 120th anniversary was celebrated, as when it was suspended in the Civil War. We have overcome wars and pandemics and this year presents a long-awaited bullfight that raises a lot of expectation.

Q.- And they commemorate your Golden Ear trophy in its original and more democratic version.

A.-We celebrate the centenary of the Golden Ear, a trophy that rewards the best matador of the afternoon, and we recover the vote as it was done in 1923, being the public of the square the one that will choose the winner. Since its origin, in the squares the fan and the public rule, it is a great democratic exercise. The public gives its verdict after each task and awards or not the trophies to the right-handers. White handkerchiefs are the voice of the fans. And this year the ballots with their votes will decide who gets the golden ear.

Q.- And how will you be able to vote on the result?

A.-It is exciting to recover this tradition, which would not have been possible without the involvement of the businessmen of Las Ventas, who have put all the necessary means, such as about 30 ballot boxes distributed by the exits of the lines and the galleries of stands and barrages, and the printing of the ballots on the back of the draw sheet that is delivered with the program of the bullfight.

Q.- How is the box office going?

A.- Bullfighting is alive, and it is seen every afternoon with almost all the localities occupied. They say that this year's may be the fair with the most tickets sold, and the Corrida de la Prensa is almost about to hang the "no tickets" sign. This is what they tell us from the Plaza, and we have seen it with the number of associates who have already acquired their locality.

Q.- And in addition to the attractiveness of the combination, they have a luxury advisor: the master Paco Ojeda.

A.-We have an impressive lineup, with the hand in hand of Emilio de Justo and Paco Ureña, two very beloved bullfighters in Madrid, the expected bulls of Victorino Martín, and a bullfighting advisor who is one of the living legends of bullfighting history, Paco Ojeda. The teacher is looking forward to June 4. Every time we talk to him he conveys his emotion, he has told us that many things come together in the bullfight and that he is very excited to be the bullfighting advisor in such a special year for him ... And that never toreó a bullfight of the Press!
