"Grotesque", "not convincing", "soft", "featureless", "turnip at 65 million euros"... The wild boar sauce of the Gallic blockbuster Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom, has a bitter taste. While he came to Cannes to present Just Philippot's feature film, Acid, an ecological nightmare, Guillaume Canet had to justify the performances and comment on the criticisms related to his film. While admissions are not up to expectations (and especially the break-even point with 1.4 million admissions, below the 6 million necessary), the filmmaker believes that his interpretation of the village of diehards is in no way a failure.

"No. It is by no means a failure. It has been sold worldwide and has so far made more than two million admissions internationally, with boxes in Europe, in Poland for example. We forget that before Avatar launched the movement at the end of the pandemic, few films made these figures. I am very happy with the feedback I have from people in the street, especially children, "defended the director in the columns of the Journal du Dimanche yesterday.

"Canet bashing"

The director has therefore decided to make the round back in the face of criticism. "It's never pleasant but I can't help it. I worked for five years to achieve what I wanted to do: a great adventure show. Some like it, not others. The best ratings or reviews don't always go to the films that attract the most viewers," he said.

And the "Canet bashing" of which he would be a victim "is part of the job, we get used to it over time. I hope I make another film that appeals more to my detractors and changes their minds about my work. Acide, by Just Philippot with Guillaume Canet and Lætitia Dosch, will be released on September 23.
