The tragedy took place this Sunday morning on the departmental road 700 at Villeneuve-d'Ascq, according to the Prefecture of the North. Four people including three police officers died in an "accident" between a vehicle of the national police and another car, two other people being in "absolute emergency", announced the prefecture and the Minister of the Interior.

"All my thoughts are with the families of the victims to whom I extend my condolences. Full support for the injured," Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter, referring to a "very serious traffic accident in the North."

According to the statement issued by the prefecture of the North, "three officials of the police station of Roubaix" died in the accident. A "civilian person taken care of by the officials inside the vehicle" is in "absolute emergency".

The driver of the second vehicle died and the passenger of the same vehicle is also in absolute emergency, according to the same source. "An investigation will determine the causes of the accident," writes the prefecture.
