Identifying people who are more likely to commit suicide is an important element to save many lives, through psychiatric interventions and various therapeutic methods. However, this process is extremely difficult, although some modest progress has been made in monitoring suicide indicators in some over 50 years of age.

A team of researchers at Boston University has developed a new way to identify those who are more likely to commit suicide by detecting certain markers in the brain.

According to the study, reported in the Journal of Affective Disorders, the researchers found that the functional links between neural networks in the brain related to cognitive control and self-reference processing differ between people who have made previous suicide attempts and those with psychological problems but no history of suicide attempts.

Odriana Jagger-Rickles, a researcher in the Department of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine, said: "We have found that it is possible to detect certain markers in brain connections that help identify those who are more likely to commit suicide.

He added in remarks reported by the website «Medical Express» specialized in medical research, that «this study may give way to new treatments targeting certain parts of the brain and the main functions associated with them».

A group of veterans who performed military service after the Sept. 11 attacks and underwent tests at the U.S. Research Center for Brain Injuries and Stress Disorders took part in the research to measure their mental, psychological and physical well-being. The study included subjecting them to an MRI to identify neural connections between certain parts of the brain in volunteers, dividing them into those who had previously attempted suicide before, and those who did not end their lives.

Through this study, the researchers were able to identify certain features in the mental bonds of those who had previously attempted suicide, which helps identify people who may commit suicide, rather than relying on certain factors such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder syndrome.
