The state funeral for Queen Elizabeth II and the public laying out of her coffin have cost British taxpayers around 162 million pounds (186.7 million euros). This was announced by the Ministry of Finance in London on Thursday.

Almost half of the cost – £74 million – was accounted for by the Home Office, which was responsible for security measures.

"The government's priority was to ensure that these events were conducted smoothly and with the appropriate level of dignity, while ensuring the safety of the public at all times," said John Glen, the Minister of State responsible for the project, in a written response to a parliamentary question.

The Queen had died on 8 September 2022 at her Scottish country estate Balmoral Castle. First in Edinburgh and then in London, hundreds of thousands of people paid their last respects to the Queen at the closed coffin.

The state funeral on 19 September was attended by a large number of heads of state and government. Subsequently, the mother of the new King Charles III was buried in the family circle at Windsor Castle.
