A man who assaulted his divorced ex-wife and left her a paraplegic has been sentenced to life in prison for 17 days after being locked in a car and dragged across the country to extort money from her.

The 11th Criminal Division of the Daegu District Law (Presiding Judge Lee Jong-gil) recently announced that it sentenced Mr. A, 39, who was charged with robbery, injury, confinement, and other charges, to five years in prison and ordered him to complete a 5-hour stalking treatment program.

On January 40 last year, Mr. A assaulted his wife, Mr. B (1), at a motel in Gunpo, Gyeonggi, for refusing to give him money, causing a fracture of his front teeth for four weeks, which led to a negotiated divorce but continued to live together.

After that, Mr. A repeatedly demanded that Mr. B "give me 13.37 million won as compensation for the time spent by you and the mental and monetary damages I have spent."

Wanting to end the domestic partnership, Mr. B fled to his parents' house, but Mr. A dragged Mr. B to his home and assaulted him several times on September 4 last year because he refused to meet with him.

Eventually, Mr. B suffered serious injuries, including a stroke and paralysis of his hands and feet.

Nevertheless, Mr. A did not take Mr. B to the hospital, but rather confined him in his car and spent 3 days in Mokpo, Gyeonggi, Gwangju, Naju, North Gyeongsang, Gimcheon, Seoul, and Gangneung, Gangwon. It wandered all over the country, including Jeongseon, North Chungcheongju, Cheonan, South Chungcheong, and Donggu, Daegu.

Mr. A even took Mr. B's mobile phone, cut off contact with the outside world, and continued to assault and threaten him while he was in custody to force him to sell his stock, and then extorted 250 million won.

After that, Mr. B reported the damage to the police at a motel in Daegu-dong-gu only on October 9 last year, about 16 days after his abduction, and the police who arrived picked him up and rescued him.

But Mr. A's brutality did not stop there.

Even after he was admitted to the police, Mr. A did not stop stalking Mr. B by calling and texting him 17 times over a period of about three days.

During the trial, Mr. A denied the allegations, claiming that "he was on a trip with Mr. B, and a physical fight broke out, and in the process, Mr. B fell and injured himself, but it was not intentional."

However, this was not accepted by the tribunal.

The court found Mr. A guilty of all charges, explaining that "irregular movement is hardly considered normal travel, and it makes no sense to travel in a paraplegic state without even seeking medical attention," and that "it implies that the victim who suffered physical injury was in a state of psychological withdrawal or desperation."

"Based on the relevant evidence and legal principles, the defendant's argument cannot be accepted," he said, adding that "despite the severity of the injuries sustained by Mr. B and the fact that he was suffering considerable mental distress, Mr. A did not make any effort to recover Mr. B's damages."
