• In 2022, 19,770 burglaries or attempted burglaries of dwellings were recorded in Occitania, or 5.4 burglaries per thousand dwellings.
  • The burglary rate is lower in rural departments than in urban departments. Lozère, Aveyron and Lot are among the ten departments of France with the lowest rates.
  • Burglaries have dropped sharply in Occitania between 2016 and 2022.

19,770. This is the number of burglaries or attempted burglaries that were recorded in Occitania (5.4 per thousand dwellings, against 5.8 in France, excluding Mayotte), in 2022 according to INSEE. If the number seems important, nearly 20,000 in one year, it should be noted that burglaries have decreased sharply in Occitania between 2016 and 2022.

In six years, burglaries have decreased by 34% in the region. The health crisis and its consequences explain two-thirds of this decline: burglaries decreased by 24% in 2020, probably due to lockdowns and isolation measures that led to a greater presence of residents at home and therefore limited the risk of burglary.

Various measures put in place by the police, such as the "Tranquility Holidays" operation, which allows surveillance by regular police or gendarmerie patrols during holidays, also explain this significant decrease.

The solution...

But to limit the risks even more, without pushing open doors, you will be much less victims of burglary if you live in less dense rural areas. In Occitania, go to Lozère, Aveyron and Lot. These three departments are indeed part of the ten departments of France with the lowest rates with less than 100 burglaries in 2022 for Lozère. The Hautes-Pyrénées and Ariège (3.1 per 1,000) are also relatively peaceful.

Conversely, home "visits" are more frequent in the densest areas and especially in territories where incomes are highest. Ultimately, Haute-Garonne is unfortunately in the "top 10" hexagonal with 8.5 per thousand homes burgled and even 9 per thousand in Toulouse. The departments of Gard and Hérault are in the national average.

Ett, good news for our English friends, in less densely populated municipalities, especially those with a large stock of second homes, burglary rates are lower.
