The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival was officially declared open Tuesday evening by Catherine Deneuve, during a ceremony presented by her daughter, actress Chiara Mastroianni. Jeanne du Barry by French director Maïwenn, with Johnny Depp playing King Louis XV, was screened as the opening film. A total of 21 filmmakers are in the running for the Palme d'Or, including 7 women, a record level for the world's largest film festival. They will be decided by a nine-member jury chaired by Ruben Östlund, winner of his second Palme in 2022 for Sans filtre. Back on this first climb of the steps in pictures.

  • The members of the jury of the official competition were still in casual mode for the first "photo call" of the fortnight. From left to right: Paul Dano, Atiq Rahimi, Damian Szifron, Brie Larson, Julia Ducournau, President Ruben Ostlund, Maryam Touzani, Denis Ménochet and Rungano Nyoni.

  • The star of the day! Michael Douglas, honored for his entire career at the opening of this 76th Cannes Film Festival.

  • A total of 21 filmmakers are in the running for the Palme d'Or, including 7 women, a record level for the world's largest film festival.

  • Some 35,000 festival-goers are expected on the Croisette.

  • For this first climb of the steps, it was once again a parade of long dresses, as evidenced by that of actress Elle Fanning.

  • Photographers and smiles, as here with Victoria Silvstedt, were at the rendezvous of the red carpet.

  • Flash or no flash? That is the question!

  • Emilia Schüle had pulled out her most beautiful earrings.

  • And Emmanuelle Béart her most beautiful hat!

  • Director Xavier Dolan, a regular at the Festival since his first works, was well present on the red carpet.

  • We had a beautiful "mother-son" moment with Uma Thurman and Levon Hawke.

  • A beautiful "back to the square on inverted heart" with Pom Klementieff (we are not fashion specialists here).

  • Izabel Goulart tried the one-piece dress-scarf combo!

  • A small moment of complicity between the two French actors Anaïs Demoustier and Raphaël Personnaz.

  • A Cannes Film Festival red carpet without at least one member of the Smet family would not really be a Cannes Film Festival red carpet...

  • Just like the presence of former "top models" like Naomi Campbell.

  • And here comes the star of the day again with his most beautiful tuxedo!

  • The General Delegate of the Festival de Cannes, Thierry Frémaux, and Iris Knobloch, the President of the Festival.

  • Jeanne du Barry by French director Maïwenn, with Johnny Depp playing King Louis XV, was screened as the opening film.

  • Dark suit, catogan and sunglasses, the former Pirate of the Caribbean Johnny Depp, banned from American film sets since the trials that opposed him to his ex-wife Amber Heard against a background of accusations of domestic violence, has found the honors of the world of cinema. Several feminist organizations expressed their disgust on Tuesday.

  • Chiara Mastroianni, daughter of Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni, presented the evening as mistress of ceremonies.

  • "I declare the 76th Cannes Film Festival open," said Catherine Deneuve, the effigy of the Festival's official poster...

  • Alongside American actor Michael Douglas, who uttered the same sentence in English, a few minutes after receiving an honorary Palme d'Or.
