American star Johnny Depp has apparently regained fame, as he was seen taking pictures with his fans and leaving his signature on them before the premiere of his film "John de Barry" at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival, in his first major role since he appeared on trial in a defamation case that attracted attention.

Depp's fans in the French city on the Riviera held signs reading "Congratulations, Johnny" and "We're sorry."

Johnny Depp was also warmly welcomed by a constellation of big stars during the opening of the festival yesterday evening.

Wearing a black suit, ponytail hair and sunglasses, Johnny Depp has regained the red carpet ritual after being banned from filming by Hollywood studios since the court series in which he and his ex-wife Amber Heard face off on charges of violence.

Cannes did not break its promise as usual every year and saw the appearance of a host of stars, such as Mads Mikkelsen and John K. Riley and Helen Mirren who dyed her hair blue.

In "John de Barry," Johnny Depp plays King Louis the 15th. Directed by Maywin Le Pisco, known as Maywin, the film also plays the French king's concubine de Barry, who climbed the social ladder and became his favorite.

Critics highlighted the appeal of the film, which received funding from the Red Sea Film Foundation in Saudi Arabia, with a total budget of $22.4 million, but said the film lacked rhythm.

The French-language film, which has yet to be set for release in North America, marks the beginning of the return of "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Depp, who has appeared in a handful of films and television since his trial ended in June.

A U.S. jury awarded Depp a near-total victory in his defamation battle with his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, and awarded him more than $10 million in damages.

Among the stars of the opening ceremony at Cannes are Helen Mirren, in a sky blue look from dress to hair, Chinese actress Gong Li, in a black dress with a round neckline, and Mads Mikkelsen, who is participating in the new film Indiana Jones, the most prominent works presented at the festival.

The festival paid tribute to one of Hollywood's brightest names, actor Michael Douglas, who received an honorary Palme d'Or from the hands of star Uma Thurman, who described him as "an eternal star and brilliant artist."

The 76th edition of the festival was officially announced open by Catherine Denov, along with her daughter Kiara Mastroianni, after reciting a poem in support of Ukrainians.
