When it comes to road safety, the French are far from irreproachable. According to the 2023 barometer of responsible driving conducted by Ipsos for the Vinci Autoroutes Foundation, relayed by Le Parisien on Tuesday, incivility at the wheel is legion in France.

Indeed, respondents said they had 2.1 of the five uncivil behaviours tested, compared to only 1.9 at European level. Only the Greeks do "better". The French come third in terms of insults on the road, behind Greece and Spain. The survey also reveals regional differences.

Uncivil or downright dangerous behaviour

Incivility is more numerous in Ile-de-France: there are 2.5 out of the five behaviors cited in the survey. Then we find the PACA region (2.2/5), followed by Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, Grand-Est and Hauts-de-France which are in the national average, at 2.1 out of 5 uncivil behaviors.

Ile-de-France residents practice an average of 9.3 of the 10 dangerous behaviors tested. But the podium varies according to the behavior observed: Normandy wins in terms of insults towards other drivers when untimely horns are the prerogative of the Ile-de-France. The fact of "deliberately" gluing another driver is a specialty of PACA.

Ile-de-France remains the region most targeted by the Vinci barometer. The region is leading the way when it comes to very dangerous right-hand overtaking on the highway or getting off to explain yourself to a driver. This bad behavior of Ile-de-France residents is explained by the longer time spent in traffic and traffic jams.
