• Three directors and one director represent the France in the Cannes competition.
  • Catherine Breillat, Catherine Corsini, Justine Triet and Tran Ahn Hung compete for the supreme award.
  • Their proposals have everything they need to seduce the jury.

The France promises great proposals for the race for the Palme d'Or of this 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. After Jeanne du Barry de Maïwenn, which opens the festivities, out of competition, this Tuesday, May 16, the competition then begins withThe Return of Catherine Corsini (May 18). This will be followed by Anatomie d'une chute by Justine Triet (on the 21st), La Passion de Dodin Bouffant by Tran Anh Hung (on the 24th) and L'Eté dernier by Catherine Breillat (on the 25th) and are not lacking in assets to consider winning the prestigious trophy.

Since Julia Durcournau revived the winning machine by postponing the Palme d'Or 2021 for Titane, we are dreaming of a new French victory and we must recognize that, out of 21 films in competition, the selection offers four great chances to see this wish granted.

Three ladies and one gentleman, four possibilities

A trio of female directors offer works that are as different as they are seductive, at least on paper. In Le Retour, Catherine Corsini (La Fracture) travels to Corsica to introduce the island to two teenage girls who had not put there since the death of their father when they were children. Justine Triet (Sybil) takes the viewer into a trial film for Anatomy of a Fall where Sandra Hüller, suspected of killing her husband, is defended by Swann Arlaud. Finally, Catherine Breillat (Romance X) returns to business after ten years away from the sets to make Léa Drucker fall under the spell of a very young man in L'Eté dernier.

The only male director of the French selection, Tran Anh Hung (The Smell of Green Papaya) takes the duo Juliette Binoche / Benoît Magimel to the kitchen for a gourmet variation on the pleasures of the dear in The Passion of Dodin Bouffant.

Summer love, detective suspense, love initiation or gastronomy? The jury presided over by Ruben Ostlund will be spoilt for choice to draw from the delights offered by French cinema this year.
