A tornado struck Laguna Heights, near the southern tip of Texas on the Gulf Coast of Mexico, at four o'clock in the morning on Saturday, surprising most people in their sleep.

The impact on the small community was harsh: one person died, at least ten others were admitted to the hospital and two of these were in critical condition. Many suffered cuts and injuries, local authorities said.

Dozens of homes were damaged.

On Sunday morning at the crack of dawn, an ABC News crew was assembling their equipment in Laguna Heights when they heard the yelps of a dog coming from the foundations of a damaged house.

Jim Gower, the team's sound engineer, started digging, and within minutes, the hole was big enough for the dog to appear. Perhaps because of the great fright, however, the animal could not free itself with its own strength.

After widening the hole and with the complicity of an appetizing snack, Gower finally managed to get the dog out of danger.
