A black series that questions. Unaccustomed to making the headlines, the city of Valence (Drôme) has been experiencing since the beginning of the week a resurgence of violence, still rarely observed. Three men were shot dead in the space of four days. Settling scores? Big banditry? The authorities have decided to increase the presence of police personnel on the ground. 20 Minutes takes stock.

The first victim, a 29-year-old man, was killed Tuesday night in the Fontbarlettes neighborhood. According to TF1, she was shot seven times in the body. Lying on the ground when help arrived, unconscious, the individual was transported to the hospital where he died. One of his friends, aged 26, was also shot and shot and reportedly had his ear ripped off. "He says he was kidnapped and assaulted earlier in the evening," said the Valencia prosecutor's office, opening an investigation for "murder in an organized gang" and "kidnapping and sequestration".

Two days later, a second victim was shot dead in the middle of the night. This time, it was a father who "was not far from forty". The man, who was riding a scooter, was chased at a roundabout at the exit of the parking lot of the shopping center of Valencia 2. The chase ended in a flurry of gunfire that caused the driver of the two-wheeler to fall on the roadway. "One of the occupants of the vehicle would have left the car to open fire again on the person on the ground," said the prosecutor of the Republic of Valence Laurent de Caigny, at a press briefing. Her scooter caught fire and "this fire also injured, if she was not already dead, the person on the ground". The man, known to the police and justice, "was released from detention, a few weeks ago," detailed Laurent de Caigny.

The third such homicide was recorded on Saturday morning. The body of a 38-year-old man was found around 9:30 am, riddled with bullets in an old bar, located Avenue de Chabeuil. He, too, was known to the police for drug trafficking cases. According to Le Dauphiné Libéré, his two brothers had already been killed two and a half years ago. Then aged 30, the first had been shot dead at the wheel of his car in a housing estate of Bourg-lès-Valence. The second, who was 37 years old, was killed the next day in the parking lot of a hotel in Valencia.

Are the three cases linked?

"For the moment, there is no link that is made with the two previous deaths," said Laurent de Caigny, about the third victim. "If I take these contrasting elements of history of this deceased, if I look at this modus operandi, I think that all this, without the need to do much criminology or cinema, leads us to great banditry," he continues, preferring however to be "cautious".

"Given the scale and seriousness of the facts," the investigations, entrusted to the judicial police of Valence and Lyon, are now under the authority of the specialized interregional jurisdiction (JIRS) of Lyon, said the prefecture of Drôme.

Gendarmes from the Drôme were also mobilized.

The director general of the national police Frédéric Veaux went to the site Saturday afternoon to bring "a message of support to the police". The goal is to deter a maximum, this is what we are already doing on the ground, "he told the press, adding that the device of the forces of order will be lifted only "when the situation is established". And to conclude: "In the end, it is always the police who win."
