Villagers in Kenya killed six lions on Saturday who had invaded their village near Amboseli National Park and killed livestock.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) reported on Saturday that the number of lions that had died in conflicts with humans in the past two weeks had risen to ten.

The death of the lions on Saturday was therefore a retaliatory action, after lions had killed eleven goats and a dog on Friday night.

Following the latest incident, KWS Director Erustus Kanga met with villagers and government officials in Kajiado District on Saturday to discuss early warning systems and how to avoid similar incidents.

It is important to find a balance between the needs of local communities and the protection of wild animals, he stressed.

Kenya's Ministry of Tourism in March identified human-wildlife conflicts as the biggest challenge to conservation.

In addition to conflicts with lions, which invade the villages of cattle breeders outside the national parks, there are incidents with elephants in particular. The grey giants can cause great damage if they destroy the corn fields or other areas on farmland in search of food.
