Emirati students Shaikha Al Yamahi and Shamma Al Falasi, two students at Ismod Institute Dubai, seek to support sustainability efforts in the UAE, considering that sustainability is not limited to a specific field, as it represents a general concept and a way of life that includes various fields, and everyone should participate in spreading and raising awareness of it, each in his field and in his own way.

Sheikha Al Yamahi explained to Emirates Today that the idea of the project falls within her first-year study at Ismod Institute Dubai, as it requires them to create a piece of clothing from a fabric obtained from sustainable sources, noting that the first stage of the work was to develop a design for the costume on a miniature model using ordinary fabric, and then implement it with fabrics made of cannabis (which has wholesale uses and is not famous for some) to present the final design using sustainable fabric.

While her colleague Shamma Al Falasi said that the importance of using hemp fabric lies in the fact that it is four times stronger than organic fabrics, and it also has another advantage, which is that it does not stretch, so the clothes maintain their shape for a longer period of time, and the fabric fibers are not exposed to splitting, and they are also resistant to corrosion, explaining that they used two types of fabric in the project, the first is a patterned fabric made of a plant, which is 100% natural, and environmentally friendly, and the second fabric is luxurious lycra satin fabric, and the fabric was used To make the shirt complete and harmonious colors.

Conservation of resources

Shamma added that the study of designing fashion from sustainable fabrics helps raise awareness of the need to actively contribute to the protection of the environment, and how to preserve natural resources for future generations, pointing out that she chose to focus on designing sustainable clothing, because it contains biodegradable ingredients, and is made entirely of natural or recycled fibers, as the fabric was obtained from a plant that does not need fertilizer, and this fabric needs less energy and water, and does not require chemical treatment, which reduces The full carbon footprint of the companies that manufacture it.

She explained that the study of sustainable fashion is also linked to addressing many issues facing humanity, such as climate change, inequality, water scarcity and hunger on a global scale.

She continued: "For the future, the fashion sector will witness a great development, represented by the shift away from the use of new fabrics, and the trend towards the use of recycled materials, which will reduce our carbon footprint, the amount of waste generated by the fashion sector, and the use of clothes for as long as possible instead of disposing of it, expressing her ambition to start her own project in designing a sustainable collection of environmentally friendly and high-quality clothes, bags and accessories, after completing her studies for a bachelor's degree in fashion design and creativity from Ismood Institute Dubai.

Issues

Shaikha Al Yamahi aspires to use her studies to reduce paper waste and gain more skill in using the Clo3D clothing design program, which forms part of her study program at Ismod Institute Dubai, as it focuses on reducing waste in the use of resources. In addition to the use of fabrics taken from sustainable sources in future future projects, she pointed out that the institute provides her and students in general with all support to implement projects that focus on designing fashion using sustainable materials, which contribute to maintaining the safety of the environment.

"As a fashion design student, I have to be aware of the environmental issues resulting from the fashion industry, as it results in a lot of waste of natural resources, but with modern technologies it is possible to reduce the effects of this industry, and work to preserve the environment, sustainability has become a very important pillar in the world of fashion and fashion."

Curricula

Tamara Hostal, founder of the Esmod Institute Dubai, said that the collaboration with Hembe People to provide environmentally friendly fabrics made from the cannabis plant is one of the many activities carried out by the institute's students to support the institute's goals to preserve the environment, stressing the keenness of the French fashion institute - which has won many prestigious awards - to apply a sustainable approach in its curriculum for many years.

Sheikha Al Yamahi:

Shamma Al Falasi:
