Hack targets data of 237,<> U.S. government employees
A hacking operation targeting the U.S. Department of Transportation has disclosed the personal information of up to 237,<> current and former federal government employees, sources familiar with the matter said, according to Reuters.
The intrusion targeted the systems for processing dues for the Transserve transport program, which reimburses some of the transportation costs of government employees. It was not clear whether any personal information of the staff had been used for criminal purposes.
The Department of Transportation notified Congress on Friday in an email seen by Reuters that its preliminary investigation into the data breach concluded that "the hacking was limited to certain systems in the department that are used for administrative tasks, such as processing employee transfer entitlements."
