After raising the temperature in 1992 with the release of her sulphurous book SEX, made with photographer Steven Meisel, Madonna will raise the stakes (and empty the pockets of her fans). Madonna x Meisel - The SEX Photographs, a traveling exhibition, will present 40 erotic photos from the book before going under the hammer in New York next October.
For the record, the book had hit the headlines when it was released. Madonna, now 64 years old, revealed herself from all angles, alone or with others to present her dominatrix character, Mistress Dita. With a price ranging from 50,000 to 300,000 dollars, fans will in any case have to put their hands in their pockets, but it will be for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Raising Malawi, its charity that helps orphans and vulnerable children in the country.
Emblem of the history of photography
Darius Himes, Vice President and International Head of Photography at Christie's, which manages the event, stressed the importance of this photographic collection for posterity. "Thirty years after the release of the famous book SEX, produced exclusively in collaboration with Meisel, these photographs remain unquestionably iconic. They are set at a moment in the history of art at the end of the twentieth century and summarize a playful and premonitory moment, which hints at the future of a public celebrity carried by characters concerned about their image. These images are simply exceptional," he commented.
SEX became, at the time, the fastest-selling beautiful book of all time. It was reissued in 2022 in collaboration with the fashion house Saint Laurent. The exhibition will travel to three Christie's stores: in London between May 23 and June 2, in Paris from June 27 to July 6, and in New York from October 30 until October 6, the date of the auction.
