An organized trafficking of drugs with drug dealing in the prison of Augusta, in Syracuse, is at the center of an operation by the Guardia di Finanza and Penitentiary Police that led to the issuance of an order of personal precautionary measures against eleven suspects. The investigation, called Alcatraz, is coordinated by the district anti-mafia direction of the Catania Public Prosecutor's Office, which also disputes "undue access to devices suitable for communication by detainees". The measure is being implemented in Sicily, Calabria and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Over 80 people are involved in the Alcatraz operation, including soldiers from the provincial command of the Guardia di Finanza of Catania and the Palermo investigative unit of the Penitentiary Police. The measure was carried out with the help of financiers of the Central Investigation Service on Organized Crime, of the provincial commands of Palermo, Ragusa and Udine of the Fiamme Gialle and, for the Penitentiary Police, with the help of personnel of the investigative unit of Padua and Catanzaro, under the coordination of the Central Investigative Unit.

The order of personal precautionary measures was issued by the investigating judge of Catania, at the request of the Dda of the Etna capital.
