Forget the matcha latte, instead of chlorophyll water? The hashtag #ChlorophyllWater now has more than 250 million views on TikTok. It was enough for this drink to become the new trend of the moment. Behind this green water, there is a real beverage to moisturize your skin and obtain a radiant complexion.
A drink against acne
In 2021, American TikTok user Chlorophyllgirl presented chlorophyll water as the miracle solution to eradicate her acne. In one of her videos, the young woman could be seen drinking water daily in which she added a few green drops. After a week, her skin had become radiant and clear again. Today, this TikTok has more than 20 million views, but is chlorophyll water really a cure for acne?
Healthier skin
Chlorophyll is a green molecule commonly found in algae, such as spirulina or vegetables. Central to the process of photosynthesis, chlorophyll is able to absorb energy from light and generates oxygen as a by-product. Chlorophyllin, discussed here, is a water-soluble form of chlorophyll. According to experts, it is better absorbed by the body than in powder or pill. It would reduce inflammation, improve digestion, the promise of healthier skin and a boost of energy. On sale online and in health food stores, a tablespoon every day in water would be enough to feel the first effects. Be careful, it is better to drink it with straw to avoid any risk of staining the teeth.
Laboratory studies have revealed that chlorophyllin also has antioxidant properties, which help fight the various damages caused to our cells by harmful molecules. On the other hand, RIen does not prove that it makes acne disappear, contrary to what many videos on TikTok would suggest! In fact, opinions around the product are now mixed.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, suggests that the reason chlorophyll liquid gives the skin this healthy glow is due to the red blood cell production it generates. It thus contributes to the supply of oxygen to the tissues of the skin.
Drink in moderation
Be careful though, chlorophyll water should be used with caution. Prolonged use of high-chlorophyllin supplements can lead to photosensitization, meaning your skin can become more sensitive when exposed to the sun. Its consumption can also lead to other adverse effects such as green discoloration of urine or feces. To have a safe supply of chlorophyll, the consumption of green vegetables such as spinach, arugula, or garden cress would be much more effective in fact.
