A few weeks before the coronation, Buckingham Palace unveiled what would be the dish of the big day, namely a quiche with spinach, beans and tarragon. However, to avoid Britons eating quiche all weekend, the royal couple asked a handful of chefs to come up with some alternatives that would reflect the diversity of tastes of crown subjects. Royal revenues, but still within reach of all purses or almost, which is not insignificant while the British are going through an unprecedented economic crisis.

On the menu is a roast lamb with soy marinade from chef Ken Hom, a shrimp and spicy pineapple tacos from Gregg Wallace, and a succulent grilled eggplant recipe from Nadiya Hussain. For dessert, you will have to choose between Adam Handling's strawberry and ginger diplomat or the more traditional scone concocted by Martha Collison.

The king's tastes are not trivial

"Coronation dishes reflect the tastes of an era, and are, in fact, prepared by chefs of an era, with the utensils of an era, and for people of a particular era," culinary historian Annie Gray commented in a BBC article.

"And let's not forget that, until the current monarch, very few people would have been informed of what was on the menu, except for the guests. This coronation is much more openly inclusive and thus offers the new ruler a real opportunity to show his identity and style through food. Enjoy!
