After severe flooding and landslides, at least 100 people have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the administration of the province of South Kivu. The president of the civil society of the South Kivu region, Adrien Zawadi, spoke to the German Press Agency on Friday of 164 dead. The well-known Congolese journalist Steve Wembi published on Twitter, in addition to videos showing the extent of the floods, a preliminary figure of 182 dead. However, the number is likely to rise even further, as the search for missing and buried people is still ongoing.

Flooding in the South Kivu region is not uncommon, especially during the two rainy seasons of the year. The current rainy season lasts until May.
In the neighbouring countries of Rwanda and Uganda, too, there have recently been major floods with fatalities. At least 127 people died in Rwanda and at least 6 people in Uganda.
