Stars such as actresses Penélope Cruz and Nicole Kidman as well as ex-tennis pro Roger Federer have posthumously celebrated German star designer Karl Lagerfeld with elegant gala outfits at New York's Metropolitan Museum.

For about five hours, she and other stars walked on Monday evening over a beige-red-blue carpet that had been laid out over the entrance stairs of the famous museum in Central Park in Manhattan.

The dress code included fashion designed by or reminiscent of Lagerfeld. The supreme host of the charity gala was once again Anna Wintour, head of the US fashion magazine "Vogue".

The event, which is peppered with star guests, traditionally takes place on the first Monday in May. The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute. The income, estimated at several million dollars, forms the annual budget of the institute, which is now named after Wintour.

This year's gala opened an exhibition about the fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. Around 150 works by the Hamburg-born designer can be seen in the show "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty".
