Another baby elephant has been born at Leipzig Zoo. The approximately 40-year-old lead cow Kewa gave birth to a female cub on Saturday morning at 5:44 a.m., the zoo said.

The offspring made "a good impression", had already drunk and had been "intensely kissed" by the members of the herd.

Kewa already has experience as a mother and has successfully raised several cubs. The father of the elephant girl is Voi Nam. It is the third baby with the pachyderms in the elephant temple Ganesha Mandir – another is expected by the end of the year, as a zoo spokeswoman said.

In order for the herd to get used to the new addition and to recover from the excitement of the night, the house will be closed on Saturday. It is still unclear when the new addition will be seen.
