• The evil forces of "Evil Dead" are back in a ruined building.
  • Sam Raimi is the producer of "Evil Dead Rise" set in a dilapidated building.
  • "Evil Dead Rise" delights with its assumed "fan service" and its references to the classics of horror cinema.

In the year of grace 1981, Sam Raimi revolutionized horror cinema with Evil Dead, a production made with little money and a good dose of system D. In 2023, Sam Raimi continues the saga as a producer by putting Lee Cronin at the helm of Evil Dead Rise.

The starting point is always the same: the Book of the Dead (found this time following an earthquake) and a handful of incantations turn a family into zombies. Major change: it is in a ruined building and more in a forest that the evil forces are unleashed. "I considered the corridors and elevators to be the forest of this film, which offers a very different point of view compared to the scenes of racing through the woods," explains the director in the press kit.

References and bloody effects

The references to previous installments (the chainsaw reminiscent of Ash, hero of Sam Raimi's films) and horror cinema (the bloody elevator, tribute to The Shining) bring a "fan service" side assumed. Lee Cronin, director ofThe Only Child, knows his classics and pays tribute to them with cheerful enthusiasm.

It multiplies the gore effects provided by creatures more and more disgusting and aggressive always ready to fight with living people who do not remain so for very long. Evil Dead Rise does not revolutionize the genre or the saga but these bloody adventures are rhythmic enough to offer a joyful horror entertainment.
