An intoxicated passenger who got out of a taxi traveling on the highway and was struck and killed by a series of oncoming vehicles was found to have severely assaulted the taxi driver just before the accident.

The accident occurred when passenger A (52) unilaterally hit the taxi driver, opened the door and ran out while the driver stopped the car on the shoulder of the road to call 112.

According to the Suncheon Police Station in South Jeolla today (12th), Mr. A was hit by two oncoming vehicles one after another while walking on the road at around 9:9 pm on the 20th at a point 7.6km towards Cheonan on the Honam Expressway.

Mr. A, who was seriously injured by the impact, was taken to the hospital but eventually died.

According to the police investigation, one hour before the accident, Mr. A was found to have been drinking with acquaintances at a restaurant in Suncheon's ordinance-dong.

At that time, Mr. A had a disturbance at the restaurant and even got into an argument with the business owner, and after leaving the restaurant, he got into an argument with the owner of a nearby parked car, and the police were called to the scene.

An acquaintance of Mr. A dried it up, and the dispute was resolved amicably with the owner of the car, and the police identified Mr. A and drove him home in a taxi.

The accident has since occurred.

When the police checked the taxi's dashcam of the situation just before the accident, Mr. A suddenly began to speak gibberish and swear at the driver, and the abuse continued despite the driver's discouragement.

In the process, the assault ensued to the point that the car shook violently.

The taxi driver stopped the car on the shoulder of the road to report, and while filing the report, it was confirmed that Mr. A suddenly opened the taxi door and ran out onto the road.

Later, Mr. A staggered between lanes 2 and 1, was hit first by a vehicle that was running on the second lane, and then was hit again by a vehicle that was following him.

According to the taxi driver's statement, Mr. A was reportedly walking about 1 meters after getting off the car and had an accident.

Police are investigating the exact cause of death and whether the taxi driver and driver were at fault.

However, considering that there was a high risk of a secondary accident due to an assault inside the vehicle and that walking on the highway was not possible, we believe that the possibility of driver negligence is low.
