Due to the "Yangganji Wind," a typhoon-like wind that blew at 136 km/h, the Gangneung forest fire spread rapidly and caused extensive damage.

The wildfire started at 8:22 a.m.

Today (11th), the maximum instantaneous wind speed of Yeongok-myeon in Gangneung City reached 26.7 meters per second, and strong winds with an average wind speed of 15 meters per second and instantaneous wind speeds of 30 meters per second blew at the site.

With winds of about 30 meters per second, the speed limit is 136 kilometers per hour, well over the highway limit.

It is believed that the wildfire spread rapidly by touching electric poles while breaking pine trees due to such powerful winds.

The high winds also prevented even the 8,2-litre super-sized evolutionary helicopter from taking off, disabling even aerial evolution.

At one point, two very large helicopters took off, but the maximum instantaneous wind speed felt in the air reached 60 meters per second, so they abandoned the air evolution and immediately withdrew.

Wildfire extinguishing crews on the scene also struggled to extinguish the ground due to strong winds that made it difficult for them to contain themselves.

The typhoon-class strong wind that tied the feet of a very large helicopter and spread rapidly is called the "Yangganji wind" or "Yanggangji wind."

It refers to the strong wind blowing locally between "Yangyang" and Goseong "Ganseong", and when the pressure is arranged in the form of "south-north-low", a strong westerly air flow is formed, and when this westerly wind meets the Taebaek Mountains and crosses the mountainside, it becomes hot and dry and speeds up, giving it the power of a "small typhoon".
