A young Arab man accused of driving "Mazrati" on the famous Spanish stairs in Italy

A Saudi citizen who drove a rented Mazrati car on the world-famous Spanish stairs in Rome a year ago faces criminal charges in Italy for harming cultural heritage, according to the Italian news agency ANSA, and depending on the outcome of the trial, the man faces between two and five years in prison.

In May 2022, the 38-year-old drove the luxury sports car on the famous stairs next to the Trinità di Monte church in the evening.

The car caused an estimated 50,54 euros ($<>,<>) in damage to at least three degrees of peace.


Police identified the man with the help of CCTV footage at the crime scene.

The eighteenth-century Spanish staircase, designed by architect Francesco de Sanctis, is one of Rome's most famous landmarks and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
