Chun Doo-hwan's grandson Jeon Woo-won held a press conference in Gwangju with the victims and families of the May 5 pro-democracy uprising and became the first member of the
Chun family to apologize.

First, Mr. Jeon apologized for failing to apologize earlier.

He then defined his grandfather, Chun Doo-hwan, as a slayer.

[Jeon Woo-won/grandson of the late Chun Doo-hwan: As a member of my family, my grandfather, Chun Doo-hwan, is a sinner and a murderer who committed so much sin before May 18....]

He also said that Chun made democracy flow upside down and made the people of Gwangju suffer during the May 5 uprising, which is the salt and light of democracy.

Mr. Jeon said that he will repent and reflect in the future.

Today's press conference was also attended by Kim Gil-ja, the mother of the late Moon Jae-hak, the real-life protagonist of the novel "Here Comes the Boy," about May 18, and Jo Shi-hyung, a gunshot wound victim.

After the press conference, Mr. Jeon visits the May 5 Democracy Cemetery to pay his respects to the graves of Kim Kyong-chul, the first person to die, and Chon Jae-so, who was shot dead by martial law forces at the age of 18.

The May 5 organizations are willing to help Mr. Jeon apologize.

[Cho Jin-tae/Executive Director of the May 18 Memorial Foundation: I hope that (other May 5 perpetrators) will apologize for their sins through confession and receive social forgiveness...]

It will be interesting to see if Mr. Jeon's move to visit the May spirit for the first time in the Chun family will be another starting point for the May 18 fact-finding process.
