<Anchor> We received news yesterday (4th
) that there have been four wildfires a day so far this year amid
dry weather. In particular, when there is a large fire, it is necessary to put out the fire by extinguishing equipment and manpower even at night, but in Korea, the road is not yet well paved in the mountains, so it is often difficult to access the site.

Reporter Kim Min-joon covered the scene.

The site of the Hapcheon forest fire, which burned 27 football fields of forest and was extinguished in twenty hours.

Around the charred area, you can see a road, which the forest authorities have paved for forest gardening and so on.

While touring the affected area along this road, we noticed real smoke.

[Stop! Stop! Stop! There's a fire over there!]

[Yes, hello? (Yes, it's 230.) I think there's some embers and smoke coming up from the mountains here.]

Less than 119 minutes after the report, the evolution squad arrives on the road.

[There's a dead tree in the ground, and it's on fire right now.]

The fire extinguishers are cleaning up the debris.

Next to the site is a road, or forest road, and the closer the road is to the site, the faster it is to move equipment or people to catch embers.

By the end of last year, the total length of forest roads cleared in Korea's forests was about 10,2 km.

However, the forest density per forest area is 5.3 meters per ha, which is only one-fourteenth that of Germany and one-sixth that of Japan.

In particular, the development of the national park area has a forest density of only 97 centimeters per ha.

The Hadong forest fire, which broke out in the foothills of Jirisan National Park on the 14th, also had limited forest, making it difficult to access the ignition point.

[This is where it ends.]

In this case, the firefighter will have to walk with equipment such as a 1kg hose or back pump.

We arrived at the site with difficulty, and in less than 6 hour we ran out of water.

[Kim Ki-so/Jirisan Mountain Rescue Leader: Even if you bring a back pump, there is a limit (on capacity), so if you run out of water, go down to fetch water....]

The Forest Service plans to expand the forest fire extinguishing forest, which is more than 1 cm wider than the normal forest road, to 2,11 km by 30, and to expand the forest road to national parks.

However, it is pointed out that indiscriminate installation of forest roads can lead to landslides and damage to the forest ecosystem, so a careful approach is required from the design stage.
