The firefighters of Essonne carried out an unusual intervention last Saturday in Vayres-sur-Essonne. They were hired to rescue a "pony fallen into a pool of 1.50 m in water," explained Lieutenant Christophe Dubois, departmental technical advisor of the GOS Animalier, in a Facebook post relayed by Actu Essonne.

Avoiding drowning

On the spot, the rescuer discovered a pony weighing about 180 kg. The animal "had both hind legs on the ground with its head held by the owner". The pool had begun to be emptied because "the emergency concerned the risk of drowning". This is "mainly caused, in ruminants, by fatigue of the sphincter muscle and not by the respiratory tract," says the lieutenant.

To get the pony out, firefighters created a ramp using a slide ladder and panels. Then, a farmer informed of the situation came to lend a hand and brought straw bales to make a staircase. The animal escaped unscathed from its small dive. "Today the pony is back in his meadow and is doing well," concludes the firefighter.
