The figures of the Federation of Micro-mobility Professionals (FPMM) have fallen, and some conclusions are necessary. Buyers of electric scooters have gone upmarket in 2022: fewer machines have been sold, certainly, but the models purchased are of better quality, and therefore, more expensive.

After five years of strong growth, sales plunged in 2022, to 759,000 units sold (-16% year-on-year). But the French market grew further in value to reach 345 million euros (+14.5%), with an average price up sharply (+33.2%) to 455 euros.

Ubiquitous until now, entry-level scooters (sold for less than 300 euros) have dropped sharply in favor of higher ranges, between 300 and 800 euros. If general inflation has played a role, this rise in prices is mainly linked to a "market that tends to become mature", analyzes Jean Ambert. Member of the FP2M board and director of the specialized research firm Smart Mobility Lab.

Half of the users ride every day

Nearly 63% of users mainly choose these machines to save time and 24% for their ecological side, according to an OpinionWay survey conducted between early 2021 and October 2022 among 861 owners of electric scooters or gyrowheels (a large motorized wheel with two wedges for the feet).

Half of the users drive almost every day and almost half take their machine in another means of transport, be it a car, bus or train. 34% of them travel between 5 and 10 kilometres, and 25% 10 km or more. 29% of users gave up a public transport pass, and 21% gave up buying a car or motorised two-wheeler.

More than two million French people now use a motorized personal mobility device (EDPM), mainly electric scooters but also gyrowheels, according to this study.
