The flyby of the large iceberg A81 that broke away from the Brunt ice shelf in Antarctica on January 22nd. The huge block, which covers 1,550 square kilometers, has already traveled 150 kilometers southwards, along the coastline, accompanied by other smaller icebergs that have broken off in turn. The images, taken by the researchers at the end of the summer campaign at Halley Research Station, were published by the British Antarctic Survey.

After the rupture, predicted by glaciologists, the iceberg turned and moved south. Experts expect it to follow the same path as icebergs previously swept westward by the Antarctic coastal current. A81 is the second major iceberg to break away in the region in the past two years, after the 76,3-square-kilometer A200 iceberg, which formed in May 2021.
